Body mass index – commonly known by the abbreviation BMI by the English name Body Mass Index – is used to assess how thin or fat a person is. This index was proposed by the Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet in 1832.

A person’s body mass index is calculated as the person’s weight (kg) divided by the square of height (measured in metres).

How to classify BMI for Asians (over 20 years old):

  • Under 15: Very underweight
  • From 15 to 16: Underweight
  • From 16 to 18.5: Underweight
  • From 18.5 to 23: Normal
  • From 23 to 25: Pre-obesity
  • From 25 to 30: Obesity Grade 1
  • From 30 to 40: Obesity Grade 2
