Body mass index – commonly known by the abbreviation BMI by the English name Body Mass Index – is used to assess how thin or fat a person is. This index was proposed by the Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet in 1832.
A person’s body mass index is calculated as the person’s weight (kg) divided by the square of height (measured in metres).
